Half the slate was played today, so there is less here than it looks.

What is left gave me four bets I like. A rookie making his first career start in Washington. A pitching matchup in Anaheim that has runs written all over it. And a Golden State team catching Chicago in a brutal injury spot.

Two of these are first five bets, so we should know pretty early where the night is headed.

Play One: Cubs and Nationals First 5 Over 5

CHC/WSH First 5 Over 5 (-110)
Risk 1.10u to win 1.00u · Cubs at Nationals, 6:45 p.m. ET

Jackson Kent makes his major league debut tonight, and that is where this starts for me.

Kent has earned the call, but there is a difference between having big league stuff and having big league command the first time you walk onto a major league mound.

First starts can get messy fast. A little extra adrenaline, the fastball jumps, the command comes and goes, and suddenly there are two runners on even when the stuff looks good.

The weather is helping the offense too. It is hot in Washington, around 89 degrees, dry, with a light breeze pushing toward right-center.

That is not the kind of environment where I want to bet on a rookie settling in immediately.

David Peterson is fine on the other side, but he is not a pitcher I am scared to go against here either. Washington has been aggressive early at home, and that matters when the entire bet is only five innings.

We need six runs before the starters leave.

With Kent making his debut and the conditions leaning offense, I think we get there.

Play Two: Jackson Kent Over 3.5 Strikeouts

Jackson Kent Over 3.5 Ks (-130)
Risk 0.50u · Cubs at Nationals, 6:45 p.m. ET

Same game, completely different angle.

Kent struck out 105 hitters in 94 innings in the minors this year. The swing-and-miss stuff is there.

That is what I care about most with a number this low.

We are not asking him to dominate for six innings. We need four strikeouts.

The Cubs can swing and miss against left-handed pitching, and there is always some value in a lineup seeing a pitcher for the first time. Kent should get at least one trip through the order before Chicago really has a feel for what he is doing.

I also do not think this fights the over at all.

Kent can strike out five or six guys and still walk a couple, give up some hard contact and allow three runs.

In fact, that is pretty much the type of start I am betting on.

Some strikeouts. Some traffic. Some damage.

Four Ks is a low enough bar that I am willing to take the shot.

Play Three: Rangers and Angels First 5 Over 5

TEX/LAA First 5 Over 5 (+100)
Risk 1.00u to win 1.00u · Rangers at Angels, 10:10 p.m. ET

George Klassen has a 7.27 ERA and a 2.88 WHIP. There is your starting point.

He walks people, pitches with traffic and gives up hard contact. That combination is usually how innings get away from you in a hurry.

Now he gets Texas.

This is easily one of the toughest lineups he has seen lately, and I do not trust him to navigate it cleanly.

The Angels can do their part too.

Cal Quantrill is making the spot start with Nathan Eovaldi out, and I am not interested in asking him for five clean innings on short prep.

That is really what this bet comes down to.

I do not trust either starter.

We only need six runs, the bet is over before the bullpens get involved, and we are getting even money.

That works for me.

Play Four: Rangers ML + Valkyries ML

Rangers ML + Valkyries ML Parlay (+110)
Risk 1.50u to win 1.65u · Both start just after 10:00 p.m. ET

This is basically a way to combine my two favorite win spots on the board without laying a ridiculous price on either one by itself.

Texas gets Klassen.

Golden State gets a depleted Chicago team at home.

I like both teams to win. I just do not want to lay the individual moneyline prices.

Put them together and we are getting plus money.

The Golden State side is the one I feel best about.

Chicago is without Skylar Diggins, Rickea Jackson and Sydney Taylor tonight.

The last time these teams played, Diggins and Jackson combined for 40 of Chicago's 69 points in the upset win.

That is a massive amount of offense sitting on the bench tonight.

Golden State is still the best defensive team in the league by points allowed, giving up just 77 per game, and they have been playing some of their best basketball since the break.

The spread kept climbing this afternoon, and that is exactly why I would rather use the moneyline here.

I do not need Golden State to win by ten.

I need them to win.

Same with Texas.

Pair them together and I will take +110.

What I Passed On

Pittsburgh at plus money caught my eye earlier and apparently the market saw the same thing.

The price went from +109 to minus money late this afternoon.

At that point, it is not the same bet anymore.

Being right about the original number does not mean you chase whatever is left. That is how a good read turns into a bad ticket.

I also passed on Golden State -9.5.

I liked it lower, but the number moved a full point past where I wanted to play it. There is also still a knee on the injury report that has not completely cleared up.

The moneyline in the parlay gives me the same opinion without asking Golden State to bury them.

Boston and Toronto under 7.5 has a case too, but too much of the market has already moved to 7.

I am not paying extra juice to bet an under after the best number is gone.
