Football is back!

Football is back.

SweepGrind officially launched in August, so most of our work together so far has been grinding MLB and WNBA. Today we finally get college football back on the board.

Week 0 is not the time to force action just because games are on TV. We went through the entire card and came away with three bets we actually wanted at the current numbers.

Three tickets. Everything else is a pass.

The Card

San Jose State at USC Over 60.5 (-126) · Kalshi
Risk 1.89u to win 1.50u · Kick 3:00 p.m. ET · LA Memorial Coliseum

Our biggest play of the day. USC has a massive offensive advantage in this matchup, and we think this game has a real chance to get into the 60s quickly.

Hawai'i +4 (-110) · BetOnline
Risk 1.10u to win 1.00u · Kick 7:00 p.m. ET · Hawai'i at Stanford

This one comes down to quarterback play and continuity. Hawai'i knows exactly what it has in Micah Alejado. Stanford is breaking in a new coach and a quarterback who has not played in nearly two years. We will take the four points.

TCU ML + UNLV ML (+104) · BetOnline
Risk 1.00u to win 1.04u · TCU kicks at noon ET in Dublin · UNLV kicks at 10:00 p.m. ET at Allegiant Stadium

We like both teams to win, but we do not like either spread enough to lay the points. The moneyline parlay gets us plus money without asking either team to cover an inflated number.

We grade every play and leave every result up. Wins and losses both stay on the board.

Hawai'i +4 (-110) at Stanford

Saturday, Aug. 29 · Stanford Stadium · Opened: Stanford -3 / 50.5 · Current: Stanford -4 / 48.5

This bet starts with Micah Alejado.

Alejado won Mountain West Freshman of the Year in 2025, becoming the first Hawai'i player ever to win the award. He led the conference in regular-season passing, set the program's freshman record with 21 passing touchdowns and finished with 24 total scores.

More importantly, he got better as the season went along.

His late-season passing lines included 367 yards and three touchdowns, 256 and three, 289 and two, and 274 and three.

Hawai'i went roughly 6-2 over its final eight games. In the last-ten sample we have, the Rainbow Warriors went 7-3 both straight up and against the spread, with wins over Air Force, Utah State, Colorado State, San Diego State, Wyoming and Cal.

That matters a hell of a lot more to us than some generic Week 0 trend.

The matchup also favors what Hawai'i does best.

The Rainbow Warriors finished around 29th nationally in EPA per pass last season. Stanford's pass defense was roughly 107th.

Now Stanford enters the opener changing both its head coach and quarterback.

Tavita Pritchard takes over the program, while Michigan transfer Davis Warren gets the start at quarterback. Warren is coming off an ACL injury and missed the entire 2025 season.

His first live game action in roughly 20 months comes as a four-point favorite against a team with the better established quarterback.

We are not laying that number.

Stanford's offense was also one of the worst in college football last year. The Cardinal ranked around 111th in EPA per pass, 102nd in EPA per rush, 120th in available yards, 120th in early-down EPA and 116th in success rate.

The new staff clearly wants a more physical offense built around the offensive line, Micah Ford and Cedric Irvin.

That style works for us.

We do not need Hawai'i to turn this into a shootout. A slower game makes four points more valuable.

24-20 works.

20-17 works.

17-13 works.

These teams played a 23-20 game in Honolulu last season, with Hawai'i winning outright.

The betting splits are interesting too. Stanford has attracted the spread tickets, but Hawai'i has taken roughly 70 percent of the moneyline handle on only about 30 percent of the tickets.

Give us the points.

Hawai'i +4 at -110 is the play.

San Jose State at USC Over 60.5 (-126)

Saturday, Aug. 29 · LA Memorial Coliseum · Opened: USC -35.5 / 58 · Current: USC -38.5 / 61.5

Lincoln Riley has shown exactly what he is willing to do to overmatched teams at the Coliseum.

USC opened at home last season by beating Missouri State 73-13, the most points the program had scored in a game since 1930.

The Trojans followed that up with a 59-20 win over Georgia Southern.

That is 132 points in two home games.

San Jose State has the type of defense USC should be able to attack from the opening drive.

The Trojans finished No. 1 in the country in EPA per pass last season, and Jayden Maiava returns after throwing for more than 3,700 yards and accounting for 30 total touchdowns.

San Jose State's pass defense ranked roughly 122nd.

The Spartans also lost their starting quarterback and top receiver to the transfer portal. Luke Weaver, a former Hawai'i backup, now takes over at quarterback.

The math here is pretty simple.

If USC scores into the 50s, we probably only need San Jose State to find 10 to 14 points.

The market has already moved aggressively toward the Over.

The total opened 58 and has climbed to 61.5 at most sportsbooks. DraftKings has shown roughly 80 percent of the handle and 71 percent of the tickets on the Over, while Circa has shown even stronger support.

The independent projections we have are clustered around 59.6 to 61.

Over 60.5 at -126 is the bet.

USC has the firepower to do most of the work itself. We just need San Jose State to help enough to get us home.

TCU ML + UNLV ML (+104)

Saturday, Aug. 29 · TCU vs. North Carolina, Aviva Stadium, Dublin · UNLV vs. Memphis, Allegiant Stadium

TCU

TCU moved from roughly -6.5 to -8.5 against North Carolina.

We want no part of laying 8.5 points in a Week 0 game in Dublin.

But we do expect TCU to win.

North Carolina arrives in Ireland with a lot going on inside the program.

GM Michael Lombardi is on leave and is not currently part of the operation. Defensive coordinator Steve Belichick is on medical leave and did not make the trip. Bill Belichick is expected to handle the defensive play calling himself.

That is a lot of moving parts for an opener on a neutral field thousands of miles from home.

The offense does not give us much more confidence.

Billy Edwards Jr. takes over at quarterback after barely playing last season because of a knee injury, and UNC is also operating with a new play caller.

The 2025 version of North Carolina struggled to run the football and had major problems getting opponents off the field on third and fourth down.

Now that team enters a new season with even less continuity.

TCU has issues of its own, which is why we want the moneyline.

The projected starting safety was dismissed following a locker-room incident. A receiver did not make the Ireland trip. Harvard transfer Jaden Craig is starting at quarterback under a new offensive coordinator.

There are enough unknowns here that laying more than a touchdown makes very little sense.

We just need TCU to win.

UNLV

The second leg is UNLV at home against Memphis.

This is one of the spots where looking at last year's numbers can get you in trouble.

Memphis lost its coaching staff and almost its entire starting lineup. Whatever you thought about the 2025 Memphis team does not automatically apply to the group taking the field today.

This is basically a new program playing its first game together.

UNLV has much more stability under Dan Mullen and gets the game at home inside Allegiant Stadium.

The Rebels also have experience in the quarterback room with Jackson Arnold and Alex Orji.

The quarterback pecking order is still unsettled, which is one reason we are staying away from the spread.

We just need them to win the game.

BetOnline gives us TCU ML + UNLV ML at +104.

Two teams we expect to win at a plus-money price.

What We Passed, On Purpose

NC State +4

CJ Bailey is a legitimate Week 0 quarterback, and Virginia enters the opener dealing with a lengthy injury list.

The problem is the number.

The dog support we liked came at +5.5 and +6. We are not turning that into a +4 bet because we missed the better price.

Pass.

Sacramento State / Eastern Michigan Over 53.5

Our projections came in a point or two above the total, and Eastern Michigan has allowed more than six yards per play in back-to-back seasons.

There is plenty to like about the matchup.

There is also a big difference between liking an Over early and chasing it after the market moves.

Sacramento State is entering its first FBS season with a new staff. There are enough unknowns already.

Week 0 is a smaller card by design.

There are new coaches everywhere, transfer-heavy rosters and teams playing their first real snaps together. This is not the week to pretend we know more than we do.

We found three bets where we like the matchup and the price.

That is enough.

We will be grinding college football every week, and the receipts will stay public.
